NOVELTY LIGHTER LEGISLATION:

The nationwide effort by the fire service to eliminate novelty lighters is gaining support.  To date, 18 states have proposed or passed legislation that prohibits the sale or distribution of toy-like lighters. Local fire departments are active in the movement, and
this public service announcement is being aired widely by area television stations to inform local communities about the issue. 

As of March 17th, the following states have proposed or passed novelty lighter legislation:
ArizonaFebruary 12, 2009-- HB 2537 introduced to ban sale and distribution.
Arkansas   March 2, 2009– Governor signed law banning sale and distribution.
California  February 25, 2009– Bill 625 introduced to ban the sale or distribution.
Connecticut    February 11, 2009-- SB-907 introduced to ban the sale of novelty lighters.
Hawaii      January 26, 2009-- Bill 1061 introduced to ban the sale or distribution. 
Illinois      February 20, 2009-- SB 2180 introduced to ban the sale and distribution.
Iowa        February 11, 2009-- SF 143 to conduct novelty lighter safety study.
Kansas     February 5, 2009-- HB 2268 introduced to ban the sale and distribution. 
Maine       March 24, 2008-- law passed banning the sale of novelty lighters. 
Michigan   May 20, 2008-- HB 6130 introduced to allow the state fire marshal to ban the sale and distribution of novelty lighters.
Missouri    January 8, 2009-- HB 98 introduced to ban sale or giveaway.
New Jersey     October 6, 2008-- SB2151 introduced to ban the sale of novelty lighters.
New York  April 22, 2008-- bill introduced to prohibit the sale of novelty lighters. 
Oregon     February 23, 2009-- law passed banning toy-like novelty lighters.
Tennessee April 23, 2008– law passed banning sale of novelty lighters without safeties.
Texas       November 12, 2008-- HB 90 introduced to prohibit the sale of novelty lighters.
Vermont   January 29, 2009-- H99 to ban sale of novelty lighters referred to committee.
Virginia     February 28, 2009-- law passed prohibiting the purchase of novelty lighters those under the age of 18.
Washington    January 12, 2009-- HB1015 and SB5011 introduced to ban the sale and distribution.

F.Y.I. - MANIFOLD FAILURE:
Sussex County just had a Snap - Tite Manifold Failure (Street Hydrant) at a Tanker Drill on Monday July 27,2009.  Please advise your Departments to check for any cracks in manifold casts & to monitor their pressures at Manufacturers recommendations.  This is at least the third one that I have heard of, 2 in New Jersey & 1 In New York.   See attached photographs.
